About Us

Carlisle Advanced Motorists (CAM) is one of over 200 Local Groups up and down the country, affiliated to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

The IAM's official launch was on June 12 1956

Currently there are over
112 000 IAM members who have passed the Advanced Driving / Riding test.

The IAM’s Advanced / Driving Tests are recognised and accredited by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA).

Advanced Motorcyclist and Driver



The aim of CAM and of the IAM is to improve road safety through improvement of driver and motorcycle rider standards.

We achieve this by preparing Associate Members to pass the lAM's Advanced Car Driving or Advanced Motorcycle Riding Test.

Advanced drivers / riders use the ‘Vanishing Point’ (also known as the ‘Limit Point’) to help them decide how tight a corner is.

Advanced drivers / riders will often take corners and bends under slight acceleration.
